GoCertify: How important are practice test questions in preparing for a certification exam?
Chris Crayton: In a nutshell, practicing with the proper relevant test questions can make the difference whether you pass and fail. Score 100% on every practice exam you can get your hands on before sitting for any certification exam.
GoCertify: Is it possible to study for and pass this exam without hands-on access to computers and hardware?
Chris Crayton: Yes. It is possible. Unfortunately, this is true for many computerized certification exams. However, it will do you absolutely no good to get certified in anything without hands-on experience to back you up as you pursue a career in information technology. "Certified Paper People" are easily weeded out by interviewing professionals and others with experience. Get the education, get the experience and get the certification!
GoCertify: How long should a candidate plan to spend preparing before attempting the exam?
Chris Crayton: Because individual skill levels vary so much, it totally depends on the candidate. If a person has been building and repairing computers for a year and have successfully completed an A+ technical class, they can usually study for two weeks and pass both A+ exams. This assumes they are using productive study tools with relevant material. If a candidate has no experience, I recommend getting some first.
GoCertify: Do you recommend any particular order for taking the hardware and OS exams?
Chris Crayton: For most, this is their first experience with computerized certification testing. For morale, it is most important that you pass your very first exam. This can set the tone for many exams to come. The hardware exam is much easier than the OS exam. Take the hardware exam first, then the OS exam. Study for both before taking the hardware exam. It is likely you will see operating systems material on the hardware exam.
GoCertify: What other advice do you have for individuals who will be taking the A+ exams?
Chris Crayton: Treat each question on the actual exam as if it were the difference between you passing and failing. Be confident and follow a steady pace through the questions. Read each question very carefully and do not let tricky words or phrases get you confused. As you take relative practice tests, teach yourself how to eliminate the "fluff" in each question. Study books and exam related material written specifically by professionals who actually administrate, monitor and repair computers and networks. This will give you real world insight through the eyes of the experienced.
