But these sites can still prove useful, especially since the price tag is so attractive. Use them to test yourself once you’ve already done the majority of your studying. Make it into a contest to identify where the brain dumps are wrong. If you encounter material that’s completely new to you stop, and look it up in a reference you can count on. Bottom line: use brain dumps and cram sites to reinforce your learning, not initiate it, and they can become valuable tools. Web destinations in this category include Cramsession and Braindump Heaven.
Informal study sites are often created by individuals pursuing a particular certification. In order to facilitate their own studies, or to share what they have learned, they start up a Web page devoted to a particular certification. Then they add a page here and a page there and a discussion board or mailing list. Before long other certification candidates begin to find the site, word spreads, and suddenly people and resources begin to coalesce into a learning community.
If you’re the self-study type, these can be a great place to hang out. You’ll find motivation from fellow candidates, leads to especially useful resources, and the camaraderie that results from pursuing a common goal. Usually there will be one or more certification “veterans” on hand, and some additional real technical experts who can help you understand the more complex areas you are studying. Such sites are typically free to all comers. Groupstudy.com is one of the best sites in this group.
With traditional classroom learning, the student shows up to class and the instructor takes most if it from there. With e-learning, it’s different. There’s no engaging individual at the front of the room to keep you on track – it’s entirely up to the learner to pay attention and complete the recommended work. For people with extremely hectic schedules this format can be a blessing or a curse. If you have a tendency toward procrastination, completing a class in this fashion can be a real challenge. If you’re able to commit to regular sessions at the keyboard, it can be a real convenience.
The activity level and currency on certification-related Web sites may wax and wane as well, especially on sites operated by private individuals rather than companies. To get the most benefit, you may need to frequent several over the course of your studies. But just don’t get too wrapped up in exploring these certification gold mines --- sooner or later you’re going to have to take the exams.
