Security is a top concern of many IT professionals and their employers. That concern is reflected by a demand for IT professionals with security expertise and credentials. The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) designation is a well-respected, top notch certification that endows any security practitioner with immediate credibility. But earning it isn't easy. To find out what it takes to get CISSP certified, GoCertify interviewed Thomas R. Peltier, CISSP, coauthor of The Total CISSP Exam Prep Book: Practice Questions, Answers, and Test Taking Tips and Techniques (Auerbach Publications; June 15, 2002). Here's what he had to say:

GoCertify: What does the CISSP designation certify and who is it for?

Thomas R. Peltier: Certification as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or "CISSP" provides managers a high level of assurance that the holder of the certification has a broad knowledge of information security principles and meets high standards of integrity. Security practitioners who have been awarded the CISSP certification are viewed across the industry as having the credibility to perform standard information security functions with professionalism and integrity.

GoCertify: What is required in order to earn this title?

Peltier: The candidate must have 3 years direct work in at least one domain as a practitioner, auditor, consultant, vendor, investigator, instructor. It is the candidate's actual time worked and can be cumulative. You must attest that you are not a criminal and are willing to adhere to the (ISC)2 Code of Ethics.

GoCertify: What is your opinion of the market for people with CISSP certification?

Peltier: Security practitioners who have been awarded the CISSP certification are viewed across the industry as having the credibility to perform standard information security functions with professionalism and integrity.

GoCertify: What do you think distinguishes the CISSP from other security certification such as Security Certified?
