Getting ready for the Solaris System Administrator certification? Peter Gregory offers the insight, advice, and technical details you need to pass the exams on your first try. We hooked up with him for the latest word on the CSA title.

GoCertify: What does the Sun CSA for Solaris 8 designation certify and who is it for?
Peter Gregory: This certification is for system administrators tasked with performing essential system administration procedures on the SolarisTM Operating Environment and technical application support staff responsible for administering a networked server running on the Solaris Operating Environment.

GoCertify: What is required in order to earn this title?
Peter Gregory: The certification candidate must take two exams: Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 8 Operating Environment, Part I, and Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 8 Operating Environment, Part II.

The Part I exam consists of 81 multiple choice questions; a 75% score needed to pass, and the exam is two hours.

The part II exam has 57 multiple choice, free-answer, and drag-and-drop questions; a 66% score is required; this exam is ninety minutes.

GoCertify: Do people have to recertify with each release of Solaris? If so, how often does that occur and what's involved in updating?
Peter Gregory: Recertifications are not required. However, with each major release of Solaris, Sun develops a new certification corresponding to that release. For those who have earned the Solaris 7 certification, for instance, they can certify for Solaris 8 by taking an Upgrade Exam, which is 37 multiple choice and free response questions, 70% minimum score required, lasting one hour.

GoCertify: What technologies/knowledge areas are specifically tested on the exams?
Peter Gregory: The exam objectives cover the following subject matter areas: System Concepts, The Boot Prom, Installation, Initialization and Shutdown, User Administration, Security, Process Control, File Systems, Files and Directories, The Boot Process, Disk Configuration, Formatting Disks, Backup and Recovery, Basic Command Syntax, Vi Editor, Remote Administration, Client Server Relationship, Solaris Network Environment, Solaris Syslog, Disk Management, Solaris Pseudo File Systems and Swap Space, NFS, AutoFS, CacheFS, Naming Services, NIS, Role-Based Access Control, Solaris Management Console and Solstice Adminsuite, and Jumpstart Automatic Installation.
