Security, low cost, and the open source nature of the Linux operating system are just a few of the features that are leading to the increasing adoption of Linux by businesses and government organizations. Linux is a very powerful operating system, and very different from other operating systems you might be familiar with, and Linux+ certification can be the perfect path into learning and mastering this increasingly popular platform. Author Robb Tracy, who holds numerous certifications including Linux+, recently took the time to share his expertise on the value and use of Linux certification, exactly what you will need to know to pass the exam, and how to approach learning it.

GoCertify: How does being certified in Linux + compare to other Linux certifications?

Robb Tracy: Linux+ is the ideal entry-level Linux certification. Linux is a complex operating system and it's best to approach it one step at a time. I've known many IT professionals who were already certified on other operating systems (such as Windows and NetWare) who tackled a high-level Linux certification on their first foray into the Linux world. Without exception, they failed miserably.

Linux is very different from these other operating systems. I strongly recommend that anyone wanting to get Linux certified begin their journey with the Linux+ certification program. With the knowledge and experience gained by becoming Linux+ certified, you'll be much better prepared for more advanced Linux certification programs. It's the idea stepping-stone to other, more advanced certs.

GoCertify: What will someone with this certification be able to do?

Robb Tracy: A Linux+ certified IT professional should be able to install, configure, and provide first-level support for Linux workstations. Essentially, it prepares you to function in a Help Desk Technician or front-line Technical Support Engineer role.

What it does not do is prepare you to work in the server room. While it does require you to know basic information about some network services on Linux, you will need additional training before you can design and implement a complex Linux-based network solution.

GoCertify: What are the major topics covered by the Linux+ certification and which receive the greatest focus?

Robb Tracy: IT professionals who are Linux+ certified can be expected to competently do the following:

  • Install Linux.
  • Use the Linux shell prompt.
  • Use Linux text editors.
  • Create and mount Linux file systems.
  • Backup the file system.
  • Manage Linux users and groups.
  • Manage ownership and permissions.
  • Manage packages on the system.
  • Work with environment variables.
  • Redirect input and output when working from the shell prompt.
  • Create basic shell scripts.
  • Manage Linux processes.
  • Configure Linux bootloaders & runlevels.
  • Manage kernel modules.
  • Manage the Linux GUI.
  • Configure networking.
  • Configure Linux services.
  • Manage Linux security.
  • Troubleshoot problems with the system.
The certification focuses on managing Linux systems from the shell prompt. It emphasizes the ability to do the following tasks from the shell prompt:
  • Managing the file system.
  • Managing users and groups.
  • Managing permissions.
  • Managing packages.
  • Working with the shell prompt.
  • Managing processes.
