Certification Learning At Conferences And Trade Shows

Certification vendors often offer free or discounted exams at events where they have a major presence. So if you've prepared in advance, or are an extremely quick study, you may even be able to go directly from the classroom to the testing room and come home certified (or at least a little bit closer).

It's About Connections

Right up there with training, one of the main reasons to attend a conference is to make professional connections - with industry developments and with people. Trade show attendees get a chance to move to the forefront of the innovation curve. The newest products and technologies make their debut at trade shows. If you're there, you can be among the first to become and expert on, and certified in, the newest products and technologies. You can also get connected with the people and companies behind them.

In addition to networking with these cutting edge innovators, you can meet and exchange ideas with other professionals in your area of expertise - both at your level and above and below it. You might encounter the person who knows just how to solve that niggling network issue you've been wrestling for a month, or perhaps hook up with colleagues interested in forming a virtual study group for earning a particular certification.

Gearing Up

To get the most out of a trade show or conference, it helps to put in a little up front work. Begin by reviewing the event agenda and selecting sessions and workshops that you most want to attend. Preregister for sessions that require it, and plan to head to those that don't a few minutes early to assure your seat. Since some sessions may fill up, or occasionally be cancelled, it's best to have a first and second choice for each time slot.

When choosing sessions, don't just consider the topic, consider the speaker as well. Although event organizers try to avoid it, some sessions can become infomercials for a particular product or service. Look for sessions lead by someone with in-depth experience in the subject, plus, if at all possible, training experience as well. This combination will lead to the most satisfying sessions.
