GoCertify Looks Back: Our 10 Most Popular Certification Watch Newsletters of 2018

The new year is nearly here. That means it's time to reflect on everything we've accomplished in 2018. First up: Certification Watch.

PantheonIn ancient times, the Roman general and statesman Marcus Agrippa built a temple to honor all the gods of Rome. The modern word that came down to us from that momentous undertaking is "pantheon," which we generally now use to describe any place where the heroes or idols of a group or movement are honored.

With 2019 just around the corner, it's time to construct our own little pantheon that honors 2018. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll look back at the year that was and celebrate all of the awesome content to pass beneath the portals of GoCertify. We thank all of our readers for making this possible, and we hope that you'll join us in our little trip down Memory Lane.

First up is GoCertify's weekly Certification Watch newsletter. We've had almost 50 Certification Watch newsletters so far this year, but which ones were deemed most engaging by our readers? We're glad you asked. (Or we asked. Or, well, someone did. We're just glad.) Without further ado, here are the 10 Most Popular Certification Watch newsletters of 2018:

1) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 9 (Feb. 28, 2018) — Random quotation: "While we're on the subject of cybersecurity employment and certification, a role that has been consistently popular for some time now, and even occasionally gets a dash of glamour from Hollywood, is that of ethical hacker. Good guys, that is, who learn to behave like bad guys in the name of helping companies and organizations to shore up weak cyberdefenses."

2) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 31 (Aug. 1, 2018) — Random quotation: "A signature '90s action movie and one of the last films to feature a truly great Sean Connery performance, the naval cat-and-mouse thriller The Hunt for Red October is also, apparently, a great metaphor for penetration testing."

3) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 11 (March 14, 2018) — Random quotation: "It's been more than 50 years since raspy-voice rock troubador extraordinaire Bob Dylan got out his lyrical bullhorn to inform us all that 'The Times, They Are a Changin'.' The song could have been written in any era, of course, because the times are always a changin', and perhaps nowhere is that more true than in the IT certification realm."

4) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 2 (Jan. 10, 2018) — Random quotation: "Once upon a time in world religious history, early Christians faced a question that many religious movements grapple with: Is it better to have a narrow focus, or a broad one? That is to say, should you throw open the tent flaps and attempt to grapple with the problems of all religious seekers everywhere? Or would it be better to hunker down and focus on those who are already in the flock?"

5) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 12 (Mar. 21, 2018) — Random quotation: "It's always fun to read about other people in the IT certification universe who have gotten geeked about this or that aspect of IT certification. (It's heartwarming to be reminded that we're not alone.)"

6) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 3 (Jan. 17, 2018) — Random quotation: "You can tell the shirt it worth it, because Microsoft Learning is calling it an "awesome," T-shirt, and also because there's a picture of it on the page linked above. We think you'll agree that someone, somewhere found a stash of old T-shirts and figured, 'Well, we can dump these on Goodwill, or hey, who knows, maybe certified professionals will want them!' "

7) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 18 (May 2, 2018) — Random quotation: "How much open source excitement can one California metropolis contain? We're about to find out. In what sounds like 50 percent of the pitch for an IT version of the next Sharknado movie, Red Hat is expecting thousands of open source enthusiasts to flock to San Francisco next week for what company officials say will be the largest Red Hat Summit ever. (The flying sharks and weather-initiated mayhem are the other 50 percent.)"

8) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 36 (Sept. 5, 2018) — Random quotation: "Lots of individuals looking to start somewhere on the path to a career in information technology (IT) get their feet wet with tech industry association CompTIA's popular and long-lived A+ credential, and that's a viable path for people who have already achieved a certain level of IT fluency. For those who don't speak the language at all, however, there's a kinder, gentler option."

9) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 41 (Oct. 10, 2018) — Random quotation: "Asking, '"What's the wifi password here,' when visiting the home of a friend of relative is as commonplace and unremarkable as asking to use the restroom. And while most people are pretty good at thinking up a clever name for their home wireless network and, yes, creating a password, many don't spare another thought for security."

10) Certification Watch: Vol. 21, No. 34 (Aug. 22, 2018) — Random quotation: "You can never have too much of a good thing, right? That's the mindset for Alex Zaballa, an Oracle Certified Professional who is possibly the most Oracle-certified that anyone certified professional has ever been. (Who knows? Maybe he's not anomalous at all. Then again: more than 200 certifications!?)"
