Mapping Your Current Microsoft Certification to the New Credentials

Wondering how your current Microsoft certification will be affected by the certification program overhaul? Check out our handy-dandy summary table.

Got questions about how your existing Microsoft certifications will transition into the new certification structure? We investigated and here's what we found:

If You HaveThen You Need to Do/Know
MOS Nothing. Microsoft Office certifications are not affected.
MCTS Start looking at the new MCSA certification tracks. No new MCTS certifications will be released as of April 2012. Once the product version your MCTS is tied to retires, your certification will convert to legacy status.
MCITP (in general) Unless you are an MCITP Systems Administrator or Enterprise Administrator, start looking at the new MCSE certification tracks. MCITP certifications will not be updated for future versions of Microsoft products. When the product versions your MCITP is tied to retire, your certification will convert to legacy status. Microsoft plans to offer special upgrade paths from MCITP to the MCSE.
MCITP: System Administrator
MCITP: Enterprise Administrator
You will get the new MCSA (Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate) automatically. You transcript will reflect this starting April 24, 2012.
MCITP: Database Administrator 2008
MCITP: Database Developer 2008
Transition to MCSE: Data Platform. You can upgrade with 3 exams. You will also earn the new MCSA (Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate): SQL Server 2012 following the upgrade path.
MCITP: Business Intelligence 2008 Transition to MCSE: Business Intelligence. You can upgrade with 3 exams. You will also earn the new MCSA: SQL Server 2012 following the upgrade path.
MCSA on Windows Server 2003 You could upgrade to one of the MCITP certifications and then from there take an upgrade path a new MCSE certification. However, your path will be shorter if you go straight to a new MCSE certification. Old MCSA certifications will be retired into legacy status.
MCPD Plan to earn the new MCSD. If your MCPD is on Visual Studio 2010, an upgrade path to MCSD will be available for you.
MCM You don't need to do anything. The new MCSM is just a renaming of the MCM program and essentially has no effect on you. Starting with SQL Server 2012, Master-level certifications will use the MCSM branding.
MCA You are not affected by the certification program changes at all.

Upgrade Exam Promotion from Microsoft:

To ease the transition to the new program, Microsoft is running a two-for-one exam promotion through June 30, 2012.  If you take a qualifying MCITP or MCPD exam by June 30, 2012, you’ll get a voucher for a free exam on the new version of your chosen path.  Available for Windows Client, Windows Server/Private Cloud, SQL Server, and Visual Studio tracks.
