Oracle 1Z0-047: SQL Experts Only Need Apply

Most of these are advanced topics, which is to be expected for OCE-level exams. The intent of the Oracle Certified Expert designation is to indicate a significant depth of knowledge in a fairly narrow subject area. Put another way, this test is intended to fail people who have only a shallow understanding of SQL. Part of the difficulty in this exam is due to the fact that many of the commands are ones that are seldom used, such as ROLLUP, CUBE, or GROUPING SETS. Even when unusual commands and functions are not involved, the SQL presented on 1Z0-047 is significantly larger and more complex than that seen on the Fundamentals exam.

"This test is intended to fail people who have only a shallow understanding of SQL"

The 1Z0-047 exam contains a relatively large number of exhibits. The diagrams are often complex and normally only a small portion is applicable to answering any given question. When I took the exam, viewing the exhibit was not really required for over half of the questions that had them. The exam interface suggests that you first view the exhibit and then answer the question. I highly recommend reversing the order. If you can answer the question without viewing the exhibit, you have saved some time. Even if you do need to view it, looking at the question first will let you know what information you need to locate.

The Oracle book best aligned to this exam is the Oracle Database SQL Language Reference manual. This is an excellent reference manual, but is definitely not something designed to be read cover to cover. The best preparation for this test is writing SQL daily for several years. If you are new to Oracle and cannot spend the next several years practicing, then you should be prepared to devote several months to writing and manipulating SQL statements. Study the documentation; then practice the material diligently and your chance of passing will improve. Good luck on the exam.
