CompTIA Wishes Shoppers a Safe and Secure Cyber Monday

ThinkstockPhotos-84473021'Tis the season to be thankful ... for wicked awesome holiday shopping deals, am I right? The internet has replaced long lines at the local shopping mall for many, and CompTIA IT Career News blogger Natalie Hope McDonald says that this year's Cyber Monday (according to stats tracked in the Adobe Digital Index) could be the biggest ever online holiday purchasing bonanza. All of that activity (the total amount of dollars changing hands from all transactions could surpass $3 billion) is expected to be relatively secure. On the other hand, McDonald points out, hackers will also be busy, and it would greatly behoove all buyers and sellers to observe some of the finer points of online safety and security. The focus of McDonald's post, which includes advice from IT industry professionals, is on retailers who are relatively new to the online commerce game, or who would simply like to improve security. If you read between the lines, however, there's plenty of good advice for shoppers as well. Be safe out there!

Robert Half Lists Hot IT Hiring Sectors, Skill Sets for 2016

While many people will be seeking for great holiday shopping deals in coming weeks, others may have their attention focused on a different sort of marketplace. The job market is always bustling, particularly for those who are in need of employment. And while IT unemployment is relatively low, if you're among the host of IT job seekers, then there are quite a few employers out there who'd like to scan your résumé. You can get a sense of where to look for them by perusing the 2016 Salary Guide for Technology Professionals recently released by Robert Half Technology, the IT arm of employment resources firm Robert Half. Among the hot sectors for IT hiring at the moment are Financial Services, Healthcare, Managed Services, Telecommunications, and Hospitality. Among highly valued IT skill sets for 2016: mobile technology, big data, and cybersecurity.

Microsoft Learning Releases Study Guide, Promotes Hour of Code

On Monday, GoCertify's own Aaron Axline probed the possible impact on IT certification of Windows 10 Mobile, including by investigating the early details of the new Exam 70-697: Configuring Windows Devices. Today, as we cruised around the internet, we found that there's a new Microsoft study guide out for Exam 70-697: Configuring Windows Devices. (For the benefit of those not in the know, 70-697 is the first certification exam to be released that deals with Windows 10.) It's like a double rainbow clear across the sky. What does it mean?! Setting aside all discussions of conspiracy and convergence, there's a much clearer message from Microsoft Learning concerning the annual Hour of Code computer programming extravaganza, fast approaching during Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 7-13. Microsoft supports Hour of Code, and thinks you should, too. The hope is that a concentrated, energized experience with the basics of writing computer code will encourage the growth of the next generation of programmers, soon to be hotly in demand across the spectrum of technology employers. Find out more at the Hour of Code official site.

Training Industry Names Top IT Training Providers

IT Training Company Awards'Tis also the season for makers of lists to celebrate all of the great and good accomplishments in various realms, and the world of technology is no different than, say the world of entertainment. Expect to see lots of these lists materialize as we turn the calender over from 2015 to 2016. This week, the list of Top 20 IT Training Companies compiled by Training Industry caught our eye. Among those honored are Global Knowledge, New Horizons Learning Centers, Firebrand, Skillsoft, and The Training Associates. Selection of companies to the list, which is not presented in ranked order, was based on the following criteria:

● Leadership and innovation in IT training
● Breadth of IT training and delivery methods offered
● Company size and growth potential
● Strength of clients
● Geographic reach

Best of luck in 2016 to all of the fantastic IT training firms that didn't make the cut this year.
