Certification Watch (Vol. 19, No. 43)

In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, CompTIA names seven characteristics of successful IT professionals, Cisco offers a larger-than-life boot camp, and more.

What Are the Characteristics of Successful IT Pros?

Succesful IT pro give fist pumpIs there a magic formula for success in your IT career? Blogger Daniel Margolis thinks there might be. In a post this week to CompTIA's IT Career News blog, Margolis makes the case for seven characteristics that any IT professional ought to embody, in order to plant his or her feet firmly on the path to career success. (Might there be more than just seven such characteristics? Maybe. But Stephen R. Covey liked the number seven, and so should you.) Margolis argues that successful IT pros are defined by traits such as being passionate about technology and problem solving, or having a solid understanding of data and how to manage it. It's worth reading the list, and also reading between the lines. Margolis doesn't specifically include "making regular use of irritating animated GIFs" in his list, but on the evidence of this post and some of the others he's handled for the IT Career News blog, well, a succesful IT pro would never let himself stray too far from Google's image search function.

Microsoft Has Another Crazy Way to Save on Certification

Just like you can count on the weather to continually change, you can count on Microsoft Learning to continually think up new ways (as well as recycle old ones) of convincing prospective IT certificants to spend a little extra on certification. Spend a little extra to save some money, that is. You know, just in case. Just in case what? Typically just in case you need to take the certification exam more than once. At the end of September, Microsoft Learning suspended its "booster pack" promotion, which encouraged test takers to purchase a certification exam package that included a practice test and four retakes. The booster pack plan is still in dry dock, but the new Exam Replay promotion has some similar details. The bare bones Exam Replay experience lets you purchase a certification exam plus one retake, or you can splurge a bit and buy the Exam Replay package that includes a practice test. What was it that one French guy said about "the more things change"?

(ISC)² Has Some Pro Tips for the New Federal CISO

Did you know that Uncle Sam has a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)? Last week ISACA mixed NCSAM (National Cyber Security Awareness Month) and politics by offering suggestions to incoming President Hillary Clinton (or, you know, President The Other Guy Should an Electoral Catastrophe Occur) about cybersecurity measures to be implemented across government by the new administration. This week, (ISC)² is helping itself to a piece of the action by offering some pointers to newly appointed federal CISO retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Gregory J. Touhill. Citing data from its own report about the state of federal cybersecurity, (ISC)² encourages Touhill to take immediate corrective action along several lines. It's widely agreed that the government has some work to do to get its cyber-house in order, so we can probably expect to see more recommendations emerge in coming weeks and months.
