In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, Certiport has a new certification for anyone planning to launch a business, CompTIA pitches certification curveball, and more.

Boost Your Business Smarts with New Certification

Young dude does business presentationMany in IT are comfortable hiring out their skills to whatever firm offers the best combination of salary, benefits, location and other considerations. There's a particularly strong tradition in the tech industry, however, of bold entrepreneurs striking out on their own to provide new or improved IT products and services. If you've ever had a business idea, but haven't known quite how to get it out of your head and into the real world, then you may have an interest in the new Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certification launched earlier this month by IT certification and training provider Certiport. The new ESB is not, strictly speaking, an IT credential. On the other hand, as noted above, there are many skilled IT professionals with everything they need to go into business for themselves except a strong sense of what steps to take in order to, so to speak, make IT happen. If you've ever hesitated to strike out on your own because of a lack of business smarts, then the ESB could be just the kick in the pants you've always needed.

New CIW Cert Promises to Sharpen Your Social Media Skills

It's debatable to what extent social media actually creates or furthers business opportunities and interactions. There's certainly a perception, however, that social media is a key engine of the modern economy, and if perception is reality, then a social media certification could enhance your business skill set. Since everyone wants to "harness" the "power" of social media, but few have a strong sense of what that means, there's certainly a niche to be filled by the new CIW Social Media Strategist certification. CIW Social Media Strategist training familiarizes candidates with major social media platforms and helps create an understanding of each tool's strengths and weaknesses. You'll also learn how to craft and carry out a comprehensive social media strategy, as well as what metrics and analytics can help you most productively keep track of how you're doing.

Cisco Touts Family of Wireless Networking Certifications

In addition to linking up nearly everything into a massive web connectedness, the Internet of Things aims to puppetmaster the world without using any strings. One of the most important watchwords in networking is "wirless," and as the demand for connectivity explodes, there has been a corresponding spike in the hiring of wireless networking professionals. A new Cisco Learning Network blog post argues that Cisco and its wireless networking certifications are at the crest of this rising wave of interest. Cicso has Wireless certifications at the CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE levels of its certification pyramid, so there's plenty of opportunity to hone and perfect your skills. Cisco product manager Neeraj Chadha writes that salaries are healthy, with starting pay for wireless networking engineers currently between $108K and $150K. Yes, that's six figures to start your new job as a wireless networking engineer. That sounds like a strong bet for anyone looking to put his or her feet on a solid career path in networking.
