Summary:
For individuals who are detail-oriented and want to demonstrated advanced skill in applying codes to medical forms.
Initial Requirements:
This certification requires completion of the Certified Coding Specialist exam ($399; $100 discount for AHIMA members) with a minimum score of 300 out of 400. Before taking the exam, candidates must qualify under one of the following criteria: 1) prior acquisition of RHIA, RHIT, or CCS-P credential; 2) completion of a coding training program that includes anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, reimbursement methodology, intermediate/advanced ICD diagnostic/procedural and CPT coding; 3) at least 2 years of experience directly applying codes; 4) prior acquisition of CCA or other coding credential with at least 1 year of experience directly applying codes.
Continuing Requirements:
Must be renewed every two years by completing 20 continuing education units (including mandatory annual coding self-reviews, each of which is equivalent to 5 CEUs) and paying a $50 fee.
