Summary:
For individuals who are experts in managing patient health information and medical records, administering computer information systems, collecting and analyzing patient data, and using classification systems and medical terminologies.

Initial Requirements:
You must first hold a Bachelor's degree from an HIM program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) OR graduate from an HIM program approved by a foreign association with which AHIMA has a reciprocity agreement. Then, you must apply for and pass the RHIA exam ($299) with a minimum score of 300.

Training is available but not required. AHIMA members are eligible for a discount.

Continuing Requirements:
The initial recertification cycle for newly credentialed certificants (first credential obtained) begins the day after the credential is awarded, plus the additional two (2) calendar year recertification period. The recertification cycle for subsequently obtained credential(s) begins with the next cycle date for the first or initial credential. The next cycle date begins on January 1, and ends on December 31, of the following year.
Currently, RHIA recertification requires 30 CEUs.
