Summary:
For individuals who are interested in ensuring the quality of medical records, including verifying information and proper data entry. Certified individuals also use computer applications to review and analyze patient records and may specialize in coding medical data or compiling patient histories.
Initial Requirements:
This certification requires completion of the Registered Health Information Technician Exam ($299; $70 discount for AHIMA members) with a minimum score of 300 out of 400. Before taking the exam, candidates must successfully complete the academic requirements (at an associate's degree level) of a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program, or graduate from a properly accredited HIM program outside the United States.
Continuing Requirements:
Must be renewed every two years by completing 20 continuing education units and paying a $150 fee.
