Summary:
For senior-level IT professionals who design and implement Microsoft solutions and wish to demonstrate their skills and experience on Microsoft server technologies. Master certification is a prerequisite for all Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certifications. Note that this has essentially been renamed to Microsoft Certified Solutions Master (MCSM and is in transition to a new format.

Initial Requirements:
Starting with SQL Server 2012, new Master level certifications will have the new MCSM name, and there have been some changes to the program, including the addition of recertification and removal of training requirements.

The requirements To be eligible for Master certification, the candidate must be a current Microsoft Certified Professional (with a Microsoft Certification ID).

Microsoft offers five Master-level certifications: Microsoft Certified Master: Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft Certified Master: Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Microsoft Certified Master: Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, Microsoft Certified Master: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and Microsoft Certified Master: Windows Server 2008 R2: Directory.

The steps necessary to achieve Master certification vary depending on which MCM certification you decide to pursue:

MCM Microsoft SQL Server: Hold prerequisite certifications and pass the knowledge exam ($500) and the lab exam ($2000). There is no training requirement for this track, and no application is required.

MCM Microsoft Exchange Server: Hold prerequisite certifications and pass the knowledge exam ($500) and the lab exam ($2500). Training is available but not required for this track. You must also submit an application ($125) and your resume.

All other tracks:
You must fill out a brief application and submit a non-refundable $125 application fee along with your resume. You must then complete a three-week training session ($18,500) and successfully complete all tests and lab exercises. The number of exams varies depending on the track you choose.

Note that the MCM training classes are no longer available for new candidates. MCM certifications are set to expire as follows:

MCM: Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 (Expires, December 31, 2013*)
MCM: Microsoft Lync Server 2010 (Expires, December 31, 2013*)
MCM: SharePoint Server 2010 (Expires, August 31, 2013*)
MCM: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (Expires, December 31, 2013*)
MCM: Windows Server 2008 R2 Directory (Expires, December 31, 2013*)

*There is up to 30 business day waiting period to grade exams through Prometric Testing Centers. Be sure to schedule and take the knowledge exam, leaving sufficient time to schedule and take the Lab exam prior to the expiration date as stated above.

Continuing Requirements:
If you’ve already earned an MCM certification, you will be grandfathered into the MCSM program and will be awarded the equivalent MCSM “charter” certification with an “inactive period” status. This charter certification will expire on January 1, 2014, at which time you will need to recertify. When you have successfully completed the required recertification exams, you’ll automatically be granted the MCSM certification with an active status.
