CompTIA Statement on House Resolution to Support Research and ‘Innovation-Friendly’ Regulation of Blockchain Technology

WASHINGTON (Sept. 25, 2018) — CompTIA, the leading trade association for the global technology industry, released the following statement from CompTIA Executive Vice President for Public Advocacy Elizabeth Hyman regarding Congressman David Schweikert’s introduction of a House resolution in support of blockchain technology, which encourages nurturing of blockchain technology through government initiatives that encourage research and development and an “innovation-friendly” regulatory environment.

“Blockchain technology shows tremendous promise for both the public and private sectors as a way to reduce transactions costs, increase transparency and security, and improve the quality of services provided by both businesses and government.

“We applaud Congressman Schweikert for introducing this important resolution, which would put Congress on record as supporting more research and development in the blockchain industry as well as ‘a thoughtful and innovation-friendly regulatory approach’ for this emerging technology.

“CompTIA supports this and other efforts in Congress to ensure that new developments in blockchain technology are nurtured by a technologically-neutral and flexible regulatory structure that provides legal certainty for the industry. Congressman Schweikert’s resolution is a good first step toward accomplishing that goal.

“As we move forward, we urge Congress to create a working group of federal stakeholders that can provide recommendations that encourage the growth of this technology. And we support efforts by regulators to create regulatory sandboxes that can help manage risk, drive new innovations, and develop a strong, stakeholder-informed regulatory regime.”
