ESB Nominated for European Training Foundation Entrepreneurship Award

SALT LAKE CITY (Sept. 26, 2019) — Certiport, the leading provider of IT certification exams that accelerate academic and career opportunities for learners, today announced Alexandria University has been nominated for the European Training Foundation (EFT) Entrepreneurship Award at the European Vocational Skills Week. Alexandria University was nominated for a “learning by doing” approach and based on the quality of learning outcomes tied to the European Commission’s EntreComp Framework for their large-scale implementation of the Certiport Entrepreneurship and Small Business (ESB) certification.

EntreComp is the European Commission’s Framework that describes the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be entrepreneurial and create financial, cultural or social value for others. EntreComp can be used as a basis for the development of curricula and learning outcomes, teaching and learning plans, and for student assessment purposes. ESB has been named by the EU in their EntreComp Into Action report as a valid resource for implementing EntreComp and the ETF award nomination recognizes the quality and scalability of the program.

“The EFT award nomination validates the work we’ve done with Alexandria University and ESB to teach entrepreneurial concepts and prepare students to pursue postsecondary training or enter the small business sector with an international validation of their skills,” said Nich Haber, Director, STEM & CTE, Certiport. “Alexandria University is poised to certify thousands of students on ESB this year and they are certainly deserving of this award for their success.”

Alexandria University is the second largest university in Egypt and their mission is to prepare graduates to assume leadership positions in all sectors. In Egypt, the public sector is by far the largest employer in the country, but they cannot absorb all of the graduates coming into the labor market. Many young people are turning to entrepreneurship to create economic opportunity and also to address social challenges. Alexandria University trained teachers in the first year of the ESB program and now plans to provide the entrepreneurship curriculum to 22,000 students.

“Our challenge is to change the mindset of students in our University,” said Dr. Mohamed Belal, AU Career Development Center & Entrepreneurship Executive Manager. “The current job market leads to many of our graduates becoming self-employed, but they need the skills to handle that task. We adopted ESB to teach entrepreneurial concepts and prepare students to pursue additional postsecondary training or enter the small business sector immediately upon graduation with an international validation of their skills.”
