(ISC)² Names John McCumber Director of Cybersecurity Advocacy

Clearwater, FL, Sept. 25, 2017 – (ISC)² – the world’s largest nonprofit membership association of certified cybersecurity professionals – today announced the appointment of John McCumber as director of cybersecurity advocacy for North America. McCumber will be responsible for facilitating relationships with corporations, government agencies, academic institutions and others to encourage public/private sector collaboration, stronger cybersecurity curriculum and effective legislation to attract and enable the professionals necessary to solve the region’s most critical security issues.

“John’s rare blend of industry expertise, practitioner knowledge and academic experience is a strong addition to the (ISC)² leadership team,” said (ISC)² CEO David Shearer, CISSP. “He will be a strong advocate for the security profession and our membership. A proven, established thought leader, his diverse and extensive experience will greatly contribute to the continual improvement of our certification and educational portfolios.”

Based in the organization’s Alexandria, VA., office, McCumber will report to (ISC)2 Regional Managing Director for North America, Brian Correia.

“John understands the issues and everyday challenges our members face as security professionals, but he also intimately understands why businesses and government agencies struggle when building and educating their security teams,” add Correia. “That insight is a tremendous addition to our team and will better enable (ISC)² to continue to grow and strengthen our membership.”

“Nobody is doing more to promote the security profession than (ISC)²,” said McCumber. “We are facing significant security challenges, and only through investing in the professionals – providing them with the education and resources they need to be successful – will we be able to start to turn the tide and better protect the critical information assets of businesses, government agencies and consumers from today’s rapidly-expanding cyber threats.”

McCumber has more than 25 years of experience in cybersecurity operations, technology design and strategic consulting. His experience includes developing corporate and government cybersecurity policy, and he has extensive experience working with and advising leading security technology developers and integrators.

Most recently, McCumber was director in the Security and Risk Management consulting practice at Gartner. He was responsible for developing security assessments and guidance to enable state and local government organizations to adopt more proactive security postures, as well as influencing new cybersecurity legislation. He was also chairman of the TechAmerica Cybersecurity Committee.

McCumber is a retired U.S. Air Force officer and former Cryptologic Fellow of the National Security Agency. He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Western New England University and a bachelor’s degree from Wayland Baptist University. McCumber is also a textbook author, technology columnist and educator. He has taught graduate courses as adjunct faculty for The George Washington University, Eastern Michigan University and the Defense Intelligence College.
