Certification Watch (Vol. 20, No. 24)

In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, Computerworld offers a snapshot of 30 fast-growing certifications, Cisco offers a shortcut to CCNA and CCNP recertification, and more.

Speed Demons: The 30 Fastest-Growing Certifications

Fastest growing certsWe're a bit behind the curve on this one, but lists of certifications are always worth catching up to. We had to really pour it on to make up the lost ground, too, because this particular compilation brings together the 30 "fastest-growing" certifications in IT. Certification guru David Foote of Foote Partners, the mastermind behind the list, says that each of the 30 increased in value (as calculated via salary premiums) by between 17 and 35 percent, as measured over a six-month period from October 2016 through March 2017. No. 1 is the Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP) credential offered by (ISC)², followed by the InfoSys Security Engineering Professional (ISSEP) at No. 2. After that, there's three-way logjam at No.3, and sevenfold split at No. 5. There aren't any details beyond a straight list of names, but it's informative to see what's cookin', probably especially for tech professionals who are looking to expand their professional horizons and want to move in a profitable direction.

Treehouse Provides Training for Google Android Certification

Everybody else is doing it, so why not have Google join the IT certification ranks? Google got into the certification game almost exactly a year ago with a special credential for Google Developers. That is to say, programmers who create apps for Google's Android mobile OS. The Associate Android Developer credential is the first rung on the Google certification ladder, with a Mobile Web Specialist certification currently in the works. Now Portland, Ore.-based online education facilitator Treehouse has become an officially authorized training partner for Google Developers. If you've been contemplating making the leap to Associate Android Developer, then Treehouse is likely to be a solid steppingstone on the path to certification. There are probably quite a few content developers who have been frolicking in the Android sandbox for years, but if you're looking for a way to join the club that's a bit more structured than "throw it at the wall and see what sticks," then the Treehouse materials could be just the thing.
