Certification Watch (Vol. 21, No. 31)

In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, training and testing facilitator Certiport strikes a deal with security certification provider EC-Council, CompTIA's A+ cert gets a 25th birthday write-up, and more.

Certiport and EC-Council Tag Team on Security Certifications

Certiport and EC-Council are teaming up on new associate-level certs.Testing and training provider Certiport (a subsidiary of Pearson) broke the news earlier this week that it will provide training and testing, starting this fall, for new associate-level cybersecurity exams to be offered by EC-Council. Also of note, since we kind of buried the lead there: Premiere cybersecurity certification provider EC-Council will soon be offering junior-grade credentials to high school students. With demand for cybersecurity skills booming, EC-Council is making a concerted foray into the nation's high schools with the launch of two associate-level credentials linked to popular EC-Council certs: Ethical Hacking Associate (EHA) will provide a stepping stone to the popular Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) credential, while Cyber Forensics Associate provides a first step toward Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI). Certiport will provide schools with curriculum and practice exams designed to prepare students for the two new certs. Certiport has a longstanding partnership with Microsoft to provide training and testing for the Microsoft Office Specialist certifications.

Training Industry Names Top Training Delivery Companies

It's one thing to provide top quality training materials. It's another thing to excel at providing and facilitating access to those materials. The best training in the world, after all, can be of benefit to people who never find it, or never figure out how it works, or can't easily help students, employees, etc., to interface with it. Training Industry, which observes and reports on companies that train and prepare individuals for jobs in a variety of occupations, is spotlighting companies that excel at delivering their training in its newest 2018 Top 20 list. Training Industry president Ken Taylor said in a press release announcing the selections, which include tech training companies Cisco and Adobe, that the companies choses are innovative and thorough in their approach to training. "This year’s Top 20 training delivery companies offer innovative platforms that accommodate various types of learners across a wide variety of training modalities and technologies," Taylor said.

CompTIA Executive Uses Movie Reference to Explain Penetration Testing

A signature '90s action movie and one of the last films to feature a truly great Sean Connery performance, the naval cat-and-mouse thriller The Hunt for Red October is also, apparently, a great metaphor for penetration testing. Guest blogger James Stanger references the film, in particular the connection between characters played by Scott Glenn and Courtney B. Vance, in a new post to the IT Career News blog of tech industry association CompTIA. Stanger, taking up for CompTIA's newly launched PenTest+ penetration tester credential, says the partnership between Seaman Jones, the character who first discovers the super-silent Russian nuclear sub Red October, and Captain Bart Mancuso has parallels to the penetration testing world. We don't want to spoil the ending, so to speak, but it's a fun take on a timely topic. Penetration testing is a vital element of cybersecurity, and CompTIA's new cert could have a key role in training the next generation of elite testers.
