All Your Red Hat Are Belong to Us: IBM Seals the Deal

 

IBM has formally concluded its acquisition of Red Hat.Earlier this week IBM finally crossed the Ts and dotted the Is and finalized its long-gestating acquisition of enterprise Linux and open source development hub Red Hat. The massive $34 billion acquisition is certain to have both known and unforeseen short-term and long-term ramificiations. One element of the deal not addressed in the aforelinked IBM press release is the future of the two established and widely respected certification programs that will be now be under the same IBM umbrella. Both IBM and Red Hat have deep roots in the IT certification industry. If IBM maintains Red Hat's standalone identity, then it could be that both certification programs remain intact and distinct from each other. VMware, to cite one well-known example, has maintained a thriving and independent certification presence despite being acquired first by EMC, and then by Dell Technologies (via Dell's larger acquisition of EMC). IBM already has a large and somewhat labyrinthine certification program. Speaking strictly from a birdseye-view comprehensibility standpoint, it may not make sense to obsure Red Hat's credentials by vacuuming them into the IBM certification hopper. For those looking from some credible speculation, Certification Magazine considered the situation late last year after the Red Hat acquisition was announced.

 

CompTIA to Certified Professionals: Get Your Dream Job

 

Most of us fall into one of two broadly-defined groupings of workaday professionals. Some people have the job they've always wanted ... and some people are (more or less) takin' what they're givin' cuz they're workin' for a livin'. It's rare enough to work in the field that you directly trained for in college, or even just the field where you started out as working professional. It's much more unusual to have a job that you sincerely feel is worthy of the label "dream" job. Freelance tech writer Jessalynne Madden, on the other hand, gets all Han Solo ("Never tell me the odds") in a new post the IT Career News blog of tech industry association CompTIA, where she outlines four steps anyone in IT can follow to get that longed-for "dream job." The first two steps are along the lines of "if you believe it, you can achieve it," but the third and fourth steps are directly related to adding a certification to your list of professional qualifications. Even for people who have solid tech skills already, getting a certification that affirms that expertise can still provide a career boost. Check Madden's thoughts if you want to grok some of the reasons why.

 

What Have YOU Learned from Pursuing an IT Career?

 

Some people think they know everything already. If you can credibly assert that you haven't learned anything at all during your years of employment and professional development in whatever career path life has taken you down, however, then you probably haven't been paying very much attention ... to anything, really. Life is about growth and change, which also means that it is about expanding your views and deepening your understanding.
