Certification Watch Volume 9 #12

Certification news regarding the release of new CompTIA A+ exams, anesthetist an entry-level information security designation from Cisco, retirement of Novell exams, and a last chance for a Sun exam retake.

New CompTIA A+ Exams to Go Live September 30

Registration is currently open for the new CompTIA A+ Essentials and 220-602 exams. The new Essentials exam reflects the latest hardware and software technologies, while the 220-602 exam (IT Technician) is the first in a line of four exams that will be geared toward job roles. The combination of A+ Essentials and 220-602 most closely resembles the current A+ certification program. Additional role exams that will be released in the future cover such job functions as Remote Support Technician, Depot Technician, and an as yet to be decided role. You must still pass two exams to earn A+ certification, but the second can be chosen from any of the role exams. Exams can be taken in any order.

New Information Security Specialist Designation from Cisco

The latest certification from Cisco Systems covers one of today's most popular topics: Information security. This new specialist certification is designed for entry-level security technologists who wish to demonstrate the skills and abilities to install and support a Cisco Self Defending Network. To achieve it, you must first earn CCNA certification. Then you must pass the Securing Cisco Network Devices (SCND) exam. Individuals who achieve this certification also meet the National Security Agency (NSA) CNSS 4011 training standard. For an exam blueprint, see Cisco's web site.

Novell Netware 5 & 6.0 Exams Set to Retire

Novell has announced plans to retire NetWare 5 and Master CNE courses and tests, as well as tests that lead to NetWare 6.0 certification. The courses will end as of December 31, 2006, and the tests will retire March 31, 2007. Novell's NetWare 5 CNA, CNE, and MCNE certifications will be converted to legacy status as of June 8, 2007, but the NetWare 6 tracks are not being converted, the 6.0 tests are simply going to be replaced with updated versions that reflect NetWare 6.5. When a Novell certification is converted to legacy status, new candidates can no longer earn the title, but those who already hold it continue to retain the designation indefinitely.
