Certification news regarding a Prometric spin-off, advice new CompTIA A+ exams, new Lotus exams, Cisco certification name changes, SAS exams, and an Open Group milestone.

Prometric to Separate from Parent Company

One of the main certification testing networks - Prometric - is slated to break off from its parent company The Thomson Corporation and become a stand alone business. This is part of Thomson Corporation's plan to divest itself of the Thomson Learning Division, which includes Prometric. Prometric will be sold separately from the rest of the Learning Division. Meanwhile, the Thomson Corporation pledges to keep Prometric testing running as usual, with no negative effect on the testing process.

CompTIA Releases Two More A+ Exams

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) has announced the worldwide availability of two new exams on the A+ certification track. The new exams are CompTIA A+ 220-603 for remote support, service desk, support center, help desk, and call center technicians; and CompTIA A+ 220-604 for depot and bench technicians. Either of these exams can be taken in conjunction with the CompTIA A+ Essentials exam in order to achieve A+ certification, which now offers a choice of tracks depending upon your job role. Exam 220-602, which was released earlier this year, is intended for PC and Desktop Support personnel.

New Lotus Certification Exams Available

IBM has released exam 735: Administering IBM Lotus Sametime 7.5. This exam counts toward The IBM Certified Advanced System Administrator - Lotus Notes and Domino 7 designation. Before you can earn this advanced title, you must first hold the developer or system administrator designation at the professional level. The exam contains 44 questions and has a passing score of 75%. For the exam preparation guide see the exam 735 Web page.

In addition, the Building Portlets with IBM Portlet Factory 6 exam (#824) is now available. Passing this exam leads to the IBM Certified Application Developer - IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory V6.0 designation. This exam covers debugging Web applications; deploying applications; installation, configuration, and the development environment; logging application behavior; making models; making projects; profiling Web applications and portlets; and working with Java. Several Cisco Storage Networking Certifications Undergo Name Change

The Cisco Storage Networking Design Specialist and Storage Networking Support Specialist designations will retire on November 24, 2006. They are being replaced by two new certifications that have the same requirements but slightly different names (note the addition of the word "Solutions"): Cisco Storage Networking Solutions Design Specialist and Storage Networking Solutions Support Specialist. Each of the new designations is still associated with the same exam; however, it appears that the suggested training has changed.

New Specialist Options from Nortel

Nortel has released several new Specialist certifications covering the newest versions of its products. The new titles are: BCM 50 Rls.1.0 Installation & Initial Configuration Support Specialist, BCS 3000 Rls. 1.0 Data Acceleration Engineering Design Specialist, BCS 3000 Rls. 1.0 Storage Networking Engineering Design Specialist, NCSS - MPS 500 Rls. 3.0 Operations & Maintenance Specialist, and NCSS - MPS Rls. 3.0 Technical Support Specialist. Version less SAS Exams to Retire

The following SAS certification exams will no longer be available after Dec 31, 2006: SAS Base Programming Exam, SAS Advanced Programming Exam. If you are preparing for either of these exams, you are encouraged to take this exam before the end of this year. The credential you earn will be valid for three years from the date of issuance. The SAS Base Programming Exam for SAS(r)9 exam and the SAS Advanced Programming for SAS(r)9 exam replace the "version-less exams" being retired Dec 31, 2006.

Open Group It Architect Program Announces Milestone

The Open Group recently announced that it has certified over 1,450 individuals as IT Architects since the program's inception in July 2005. To achieve this designation, you must first have 3 years recent IT Architect experience. Then you must complete an application documenting your core foundation skills, that include people skills, project management skills and architecture skills. Certification costs $1250, plus there is an annual fee of $175.
