Certification Watch Volume 10 #5

Certification news regarding a new Secure Software Programmer certification with, store as an extra plus, better exam reports, MySQL cluster certification, a new certification in the works at CompTIA, CCIE security exam extension, and more.

SANS Launches Secure Software Programmer Certification

The organization that has long brought us security focused certifications has added a new, and we would say fresh, certification to its collection. The GIAC Secure Software Programmer (GSSP) measures secure programming skills in different languages such as Java and J2EE, C and C++, PHP and Perl, ASP.NET and .NET. The exact designation you earn is indicated by a letter after the certification name, such as GSSP J for Java. There is one exam for each specialty. In equally exciting SANS news, unlike most certification exams which offer only pass or fail information, these exams will provide information on how the test taker scored on different parts of the test, a tool that we here at Certification Update should be included on every certification exam. Now the test takers will know exactly where they need to improve their strengths. There is a special website for this which contains further details.

New MySQL Cluster Certification Available

A few weeks ago, MySQL AB launched an advanced certification for individuals who design, deploy and administer MySQL Cluster setups. The MySQL 5.1 Cluster DBA Certification (CMCDBA) is part of the MySQL DBA track and you must be a certifed MySQL DBA before you can take the exam ($200). You can find an exam blueprint at the MySQL website

CompTIA Starts Work on a New Imaging Certification

CompTIA is in the early stages of developing its newest designation, PDI+ (short for Printing and Document Imaging). This will be targeted at entry-level service and support technicians involved in the installation, connectivity, maintenance, repair and support of devices in printing and document imaging technologies To follow along as this program develops, visit CompTIA's PDI+ page.

CCIE Security Written v1.0 Extended to April 24

Cisco has extended the deadline for taking the v1.0 CCIE security written exam to April 24, 2007. After that, candidates will have to pass the new version of the exam, v2.0. You can find the blueprint for the new exam on Cisco's website.

CompTIA HTI+ Transitioning to CEA DHTI+

CompTIA is apparently scrapping its Home Technology Integrator (HTI+) certification, which was launched in 2002, in favor of an new designation CEA-CompTIA Digital Home Technology Integrator (DHTI+). This new (basically renamed and updated) designation was developed in conjunction with the Consumer Electronics Association. It is for technicians who wish to demonstrate the necessary skills to install, integrate and provide service and support for digital home systems. The subject matter covered is very similar to HTI+, but the course to certification is quite different,. With HTI+, there were 2 exams to pass, with DHTI+ there is only one. The HTI+ exams will no longer be available after Q3 2007.

In other CompTIA news, those of you still waiting for your Convergence+ beta exam results can expect to receive them in April or May. Apparently they could not be released until after the launch of the live exam which took place on March 30, 2007.

SAS Latest to Raise Exam Prices

It looks like it might be a year of rising prices for certification exams. SAS has announced that all exam fees have risen as of April 1 to $180, with the exception of Predictive Modeling with SAS Enterprise Miner 5.2 exam, which will be $250. Just last edition, we reported that the CWSP (Certified Wireless Security Professional) prices would be jumping up as well.
