Certification news regarding Linux+, medicine Security+, recipe additional Red Hat RHCE certification options, a free beta opportunity from Brocade, and a new certification from Nortel.

Updated Security+ Coming in October, Linux+ Review in the Works

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) recently announced that a new version of its Security+ exam will be released in October 2008. The new exam contains a new subject area titled "Assessments and Audits," which covers risk assessment and mitigation as well as tools and techniques for addressing risk. Also, the topic of access control has been expanded into its own subject area. The current version of the exam will remain available through April 2009.

The Linux+ exam will be revised before long as well. Currently it is in the early stages of the update process. The first step, job task analysis, is scheduled for July, and subject matter experts are need to participate the Linux+ Certification Advisory Committee (CAC). To apply, visit the CompTIA Web site.

Certification Upgrades for RHCEs

Speaking of Linux certification, Red Hat Certified Engineers (RHCEs) who are ready to move up but don't want to tackle the Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) yet have some fresh options. Red Hat Certificates of Expertise are available as RHCE add ons, and those who pass the Deployment, Virtualization, and Systems Management exam, Directory Services and Authentication exam, and Clustering and Storage Management exam can become a Red Hat Certified Data Center Specialist (RHCDS). Other topics include network services security and SELinux policy administration, among others. These exams were originally created as part of the RHCA requirements, but now they are also available separately. Exams cost $749, less if you bundle them with a course. New Brocade Certification in Beta - Limited Enrollment

NThe Brocade Certifed Architect for FICON (BCAF) is a new certification for those who want to demonstrate expertise with IBM System z I/O concepts, Brocade FICON Director, and switching SAN components in design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting capacities. The beta exam period is set to run from June 5 to July 15, 2008, with registration opening June 1st. Only 250 exams will be delivered, and the price can't be beat $0. An exam blueprint and study resources can be accessed on Brocade's Web site.

In other Brocade news, the Brocade Certified SAN Designer (BCSD) designation will have a new name and a new test that will enter beta this August. The name will change to Brocade Certified Fabric Designer (BCFD). Exam details are still pending.

New from Nortel

A new Support Specialist certification, NCSS - Nortel Secure Router Rls. 10.1 Configuration & Management, is now available. Successful completion of one exam, Nortel Secure Router Rls. 10.1 Configuration & Management (920-260), earns this credential. The exam focuses on system overview, configuration and security. This certification replaces the Rls 10.0 version.
