Certification Watch Volume 12 #8

Certification news regarding a new top-tier Cisco certification and other Cisco certification changes including CCNP Wireless and data center certification additions, major changes to Sun's java programmer certification, and a Citrix certification testing move.

Cisco Launches New Top Level Certification

Cisco Systems announced this week the addition of a new certification to its program that tops even the CCIE and CCDE. The new designation, Cisco Certified Architect, is intended to recognize the architectural expertise of network designers. Only individuals who already hold Cisco's CCDE certification will be considered. To achieve the new certification, candidates will have to first be accepted into the program through an application process and then survive a rigorous board exam. According to Cisco, approximately 10 years experience in the field is needed to attempt this certification.

Cisco Also Adds CCNP Wireless Designation, More Data Center Certs

Also this week, Cisco announced the release of a CCNP Wireless designation for individuals who design, implement, and operate Cisco wireless networks. To earn this certification, you must first hold the CCNA Wireless (or any CCIE certification), then you must pass 4 additional wireless exams covering such topics as wireless voice networks and wireless security, among others.

Four additional data center certifications were also released - Cisco Data Center Unified Computing Design Specialist and Support Specialist designations, and Data Center Application Services Design and Support Specialist designations.

New Java Certification to Replace Old, Beta Released

Later this month Sun Microsystems will launch a new Java certification - Sun Java Programmer Plus. The exam for this certification will not include the typical multiple choice exam; instead, you will have to code solutions for typical programming problems. According to Sun, prior versions of the Java Programmer certification will be retired in the near future, which of course we will report to you here. You can also apply to take the beta version of the exam for this new certification. Sun will select 200 candidates from the pool of applicants to take the beta, which will run from July 22 through July 31, 2009. You can apply on the Sun website.

Citrix Switching to Pearson VUE Testing Network

Citrix recently announced that, effective August 31, 2009, Citrix certification exams will be offered exclusively through the Pearson VUE testing network. Meanwhile, you can continue to register for Citrix exams at the Prometric network through July 31, 2009, as long as you take them by August 30.
