2010 IT Skills and Salary Report Shows Certification Still Pays Off

The 2010 IT Skills and Salary Report put together by Global Knowledge and Tech Republic surveyed over 19,500 IT professionals worldwide. Although the study data is limited as far as certification, the study did find that IT pros are still pursuing and achieving certification. One third of survey respondents earned a project management, IT, or business skills certification during the past 5 years. Project Management Professional (PMP) topped the list, followed by Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Notably, study respondents who obtained an IT or project management certification over the past 5 years earned an average of $5,242 more than those who did not. Specific salary figures and data by industry, job role, and other measures are available in the full online report (pdf).

New CWSP Exam Released

An updated exam for the Certified Wireless Security Professional (CWSP) was released to testing centers earlier this month. This is the 4th update to the CWSP exam and is numbered PW0 204. The previous version of the exam (PW0 200) will remain available through April 30, 2010, and can be taken until then at the reduced price of $125, a $100 discount. Full objectives for the new exam are available on the CWNP website (pdf).

SANS GIAC Recertification Options Expanded

The SANS Institute recently modified its recertification policy for GIAC security certifications. Certified individuals now have the option of recertifying by meeting certification maintenance unit (CMU) requirements instead of retaking the standard exam as was previously the only alternative. CMUs can be earned by attending approved training or publishing a technical research paper. Recertification is still on a 4 year cycle. The associated maintenance fee has increased to $399.
