Certification Watch Volume 14 #12

IT certification news about a new Make IT Certification Better initiative, generic updated CCDE exams, changes to IBM Lotus Notes Domino certifications, and a new MCA SharePoint track.

Make IT Certification Better - Opinions Wanted

Some people swear by IT certifications and others swear at them; most agree there's room for improvement. We've dedicated a new section of GoCertify.com to helping that happen. In the Make IT Certification Better center, you can vote on the importance of what's already been suggested or add your own ideas about how to increase the value of IT certifications. Please take a few minutes and contribute your opinions.

CompTIA CASP Exam Available in US & Canada

The exam for CompTIA's Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) credential is now available in test centers in the US & Canada, with broader availability planned for December or January. This is CompTIA's first advanced certification, and is meant as a follow-on to Security+, although there's no official prerequisite. Notably, CompTIA lists the exam passing score as "pass/fail," giving no indication of how many questions you must answer correctly to pass, which suggests that the skill level required to earn the CASP certification is a moving target.

Cisco CCDE Exams Revised

Cisco has completed the revision of the Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) written and practical exams. The new (Version 2.0) exam blueprints are now available, but the 2.0 tests will not be available until March 31, 2012. The last administration of the current (v1) practical exam was October 21; however, the current v1 written exam will remain available in test centers until it is replaced with v2.0 on March 31.

Lotus Notes Domino Certification Paths Shortened

IBM has restructured its Lotus Notes Domino 8.5 certifications into a more stream-lined form. Both the application developer and system administrator paths will be reduced from three exams to two. The associate level certifications will be phased out. If you've already started down the three-exam path, you have options - see the IBM announcement for specific details.

Microsoft Adds SharePoint Track to MCA

Microsoft's most advanced (and most expensive) credential, Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA), now includes a track for SharePoint experts. MCA: SharePoint Server is one of only 2 MCA certifications that don't include a mandatory training requirement. Candidates must submit an extensive work history portfolio and case study, and undergo an intensive board review process. The board review costs $7,500.
