Certification Watch (Vol. 17, No. 23)

News about milestone memberships, sale a new certification salary survey, and more.

Happy Birthday to (ISC)²

Happy 25thBirthdays are the worst. What do you even get the global not-for-profit membership body of certified information and software security professionals that has one of everything already? Actually, you don't have to get anything at all for (ISC)² — they've already given themselves a pretty cool gift. The group announced Tuesday that it has surpassed the 100,000 mark in global membership. And that's a pretty cool way to celebrate 25 years of advocating for improved and increased IT security. (ISC)², which administers some of the most respected security certifications in the industry, has members in more than 160 countries worldwide. (ISC)² executive director W. Hord Tipton said in a press release that the membership milestone is significant, but that it's also just the beginning. "As an organization, we’ve grown and evolved tremendously over the last 25 years,” Tipton said. “(ISC)² has moved from a certifying body to a global organization focused on the bigger picture of filling the global need for more qualified cybersecurity professionals."

HP Delivers Two New Big Data Certs

There's a growing consensus that Big Data will eventually have as revolutionary an impact on the tech landscape as what we're seeing already from such game-changing technologies as cloud computing and the Internet of Things. If that's the case, then companies like HP could be on the leading edge of the next big wave to sweep through IT. Adding to its impressive array of certifications, HP announced two new Big Data credentials this week. The HP ASE: Records Manager Administrator v8 credential is designed to certify IT pros who manage physical records and have a deep fluency with HP's proprietary Records Manager software. The HP ATP: Data Protector v9 credential is another software-specific cert that prepares IT pros to help organization make decisions about how to prioritize and implement data protection procedures.

Certiport Breaks Ground with IC3 Adoption

As computers and the internet continue to creep into every aspect of modern life, certifications are becoming a sort of shared language, connecting IT pros across national boundaries. In that vein, Pearson VUE subsidiary Certiport has created an impressive beachhead in Vietnam, where the company's IC3 Digital Literacy credential is now a standard IT benchmark at primary, secondary and post-secondary schools in and around Ho Chi Minh City. Students at all levels of the city education system will use IC3 to build foundational IT skills, while students ages 15 through 18 will also have access to the Microsoft Office Specialist and Adobe Certified Associate programs that Certiport also manages. With a population of 8 million, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is the largest city in Vietnam.

BCS Offers ScholarshipS to Recruit IT Instructors

For the third year in a row, U.K. educators who have an interest in technology can get an edge in the race to build a national stockpile of IT instructors. The British Computer Society is accepting applications to determine which aspiring IT teachers will receive 120 individual scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at £25,000, with financial backing provide by a host of tech firms and financial companies, including Goldman Sachs, Citrix, Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, IBM, BT, Google, Metaswitch Networks, Compare the Market, HP, Toshiba and Ocado. Full details of the scholarship program can be found online.

Discount Available to MCP Exam Candidates

It must be getting close to the annual holiday shopping season. With discounts like these, how can you say "no," right? Well, OK, so maybe it's not a Black Friday-level promotion, but Microsoft Learning is cutting certification candidates a break. Effective immediately, on exams taken no later than Dec. 31, cert candidates can get a 15 percent discount when scheduling an exam, by entering the promo code STU15OFF. It's sort of like when Redbox sends you a code for a free DVD rental, except that you still have to pay for 85 percent of the exam cost. Hey, at least Microsoft won't bill you if you don't return your exam by 9 p.m. the next day.

'Tis the Season to Get Surveyed

The weather outside is not frightful — yet — and the fire probably doesn't quite feel delightful. Be that as it may, however, there are probably still plenty of nights when you're in a "since we've no place to go" sort of mood, and that is the perfect time to help certification entities gather valuable data by taking one of their surveys. There's still a cloud computing certification survey in the field at, and now the good people at certification and education provider CIW are asking for input as well. CIW's 2015 IT Skills and Salary Survey is now open. To encourage participation, the survey overlords are entering all respondents who complete the survey prior to Oct. 24 in a drawing to receive one of eight $250 gifts cards. So it's almost like you're getting paid, right? You do have to win the drawing, and the survey does take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, but still.
