More Details Available on Novell Certified Linux Engineer (CLE)

Novell has released additional information about its forthcoming Certified Linux Engineer title. The certification will require passage of a hands-on practicum that is slated for availability this December. Although current Novell Services run on Red Hat Linux, Novell is recommending the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Level 1 certification over RHCE certification as a suggested perquisite because the LPI title is vendor-neutral. Note that the RHCE certification knowledge will also assist you in preparing for CLE certification, and that the LPI Level 1 certification is not required, but is recommended.

All Novell CNEs who upgrade to NetWare 6 by October 1, 2003 are eligible to take the CLE practicum for free. The practicum will be offered through Pearson VUE testing centers. You can request a free CLE practical exam voucher by requesting it online after you have completed the NetWare 6 CNE.

Sun Certified Business Component Developer for J2EE Exam Nears Beta

Starting June 6, 2003 a free beta exam for the new Sun Certified Business Component Developer title from Sun will be available in Prometric testing centers. To qualify for the exam, you must already hold the Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2 title.

MySQL Professional Certification Beta Available

Candidates can now earn the MySQL Professional Certification, the second of two certifications available through the MySQL certification program. This more advanced title is for candidates who want to certify knowledge in MySQL database management, installation, security, disaster prevention and optimization. The beta exam costs $150 (usually $200) and is available through Pearson VUE testing centers. Candidates who wish to purchase both the core and professional exams at the same time, can receive additional discounts by visiting the MySQL Web site.

Nortel Networks Design Specialist - Ethernet Switching Exam Beta Opportunity

Nortel Networks has reserved 50 free spots for beta testing the Ethernet Switching (#921-124) exam, which will be in beta between May 12 and June 3, 2003. This exam is required for Nortel Networks Certified Design Specialist (NNCDS) - Ethernet Switching certification. You can register now to take this beta any time during the beta period.

You can register for this free beta online with Prometric. Select "Nortel Networks" as the Client, follow the instructions, and enter promotion code 921124 when prompted. When viewing the list of exams, make sure you scroll to the exams starting with "921-" to find this exam.

Cisco Launches Restricted Portal for Certified Professionals

Cisco has announced the creation of a limited access community dedicated to the needs of Cisco Certified professionals. The new Web site offers access to news, discussion groups, video presentations, white papers, articles and other content on networking tools and learning. It is free to Cisco Certified professionals, who must provide online verification of their certified status before entry into the site.

It does make one wonder why access to such information is being restricted to the certified - wouldn't Cisco benefit if everyone had access to their technology papers and materials promoting their products? Is there really secret stuff that only the certified should know? Restricted forums to keep the riff-raff from clogging up message boards with nonsensical postings makes some sense, but the reasoning behind the rest evades us.

That's all for this edition of Certification Watch. Please keep your certification news and tips coming to news@gocertify.com.
