Microsoft Adds Messaging Specializations to MCSA/MCSE

In other Microsoft news, two new messaging specializations have been added to the stable of available Microsoft certifications: MCSA: Messaging and MCSE: Messaging. The core exams for these two tracks are the same as for the regular MCSA/MCSE, but then the paths diverge as follows:

MCSA: Messaging requires the standard 3 core MCSA exams plus Exam 70-284: Implementing and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

MCSE: Messaging requires the standard six core MCSE exams plus two core messaging exams:

  • Exam 70-284: Implementing and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
  • Exam 70-285: Designing a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Organization

Messaging is the second specialization opportunity added by Microsoft. Security specialization was launched earlier this year.

Revised A+ Exam Questions Active November 26, Adaptive format retired

The latest version of the CompTIA A+ exam will go live on November 26th. Actual questions from the upgraded version have been included in the current A+ exams all summer, but did not count toward the exam score. According to CompTIA, the 2003 upgrade does not include major revisions, but does incorporate coverage of the latest memory, bus, peripherals, operating systems and wireless. Candidates who have already passed the existing A+ Core Hardware or A+ Operating System Technologies exam (testing against the 2001 objectives) may take the second exam either before or after the 2003 Upgrade goes into effect.

The A+ exams have also switched from adaptive format back to the standard linear format. In adaptive testing the sequence and number of questions is dependent on how the candidate answers each question. Adaptive testing attempts to pin down a skill level with as few questions as possible, which reduces the number of questions each candidate sees and lowers total test time. This switch means that test takers will face a full slate of questions instead of just 20-30. Many candidates feel that the linear format is a fairer form of measurement.
