CompTIA CTP+ Certification Addresses Skills Requirements for Fast-growing Technology Segment

Collaboration with Certification Partners results in new certification for convergence technologies professionals

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As adoption of voice-over-IP telephony, unified communications, web conferencing and related technologies grows, CompTIA, the non-profit trade association for the information technology (IT) industry, is ready to help networking and telecom professionals enhance their skills in the world of voice and data convergence.

CompTIA, in collaboration with Certification Partners, LLC, offers CompTIA Convergence Technologies Professional (CTP) +, a certification that validates skills and standards-based knowledge in today's rapidly changing landscape of network convergence products and solutions.

Convergence typically refers to technology solutions that allow the distribution of data, voice and video over a single network. Convergence technology solutions offer adopters greater flexibility to manage and administer networks; heightened efficiency; and cost savings through reduced network management expenses and local access and long distance phone charges.

Research by CompTIA and other sources indicates that many organizations regardless of size or industry are aggressively deploying convergence solutions. For example, the April 2010 CompTIA study CompTIA U.S. Small and Medium Business (SMB) 2010 Emerging Technologies Report found that 55 percent of SMBs now use or plan to use converged voice and data solutions. That’s up from 39 percent in the 2009 survey.

But successful deployments require a workforce knowledgeable about the unique aspects of convergence technologies.

The CompTIA CTP+ certification exam covers requirements for analysis, implementation and management of basic data components and voice and multimedia applications, as well as basic problem analysis and resolution for convergent technologies.

Among the topics covered in the exam are:

  • Planning IP networks
  • Wireless networking
  • Voice and telephony services, functions and technologies including protocols, and voice troubleshooting in digital and analog environments
  • Identifying requirements for transporting text, voice, video, modem and fax through a converged solution
  • Identifying security issues for converged networks

Though not a prerequisite for CompTIA CTP+ certification, it’s recommended that candidates are CompTIA Network+ certified or have equivalent knowledge as well as 18 to 24 months of work experience in data networking, telephony and other convergence-related technologies.

With more than 1.4 million certifications awarded, CompTIA is the world’s largest developer of vendor-neutral certifications for the IT workforce. CompTIA certifications validate technology skills in a range of business-critical areas, including PC repair, networking, security, servers, storage, printing, document imaging, and convergence.
