CompTIA Strata-Green IT Exam Now Available Worldwide

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--CompTIA, the leading trade association for the information technology (IT) industry, today announced the worldwide availability of its first specialized exam in the CompTIA Strata certificate program, CompTIA Strata – Green IT.

The comprehensive exam covers green technologies, techniques, standards and policies. It is intended for IT professionals who have decision making-authority over a company’s IT infrastructure such as IT managers, supervisors, data center managers or facilities and operations managers.

“Green IT is at the heart of virtually every aspect of sustainability, from the power grid, smart buildings and environmental control systems to telepresence, telecommuting and virtualization,” said Terry Erdle, senior vice president, skills certifications, CompTIA.

“To fulfill the promise of green IT, technology professionals must add new skills unique to its environment,” Erdle continued. “We’re taking a big step in that direction through the training around CompTIA Strata – Green IT and the validation delivered by this important new program.”

Technology companies are stepping up their activities in the green IT arena, according to the 2009 CompTIA study Green IT: Insights and Opportunities. For example, 40 percent of IT service providers provide energy audits to clients; 26 percent currently offer carbon footprint measuring and monitoring services; and another 23 percent plan to offer these services within the next two years.

The study also found that among all organizations surveyed:

  • 72 percent conduct audits to assess the greenness of energy consumption/power management.
  • 78 percent factor green into their decisions when purchasing monitors/displays.
  • 77 percent consider power consumption a major factor influencing their purchase of PCs.
  • 20 percent have budget allocated specifically for green IT initiatives.

The CompTIA Strata – Green IT certificate is designed for individuals seeking to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills to implement environmentally sound green IT techniques. The exam addresses important environmental issues such as disposal; preserving power; reducing an organization’s carbon footprint; identifying green IT organizations and standards; implementing virtualization on IT systems; and calculating the return on investment involved in implementing green IT initiatives.

The exam includes 30 questions which must be completed in 60 minutes. A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required. Individuals who pass the exam will receive the CompTIA Strata – Green IT certificate of completion. CompTIA recommends that candidates for the exam have at least 18-24 months of technical experience along with CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Server+ certification.

Exams are delivered at Pearson VUE and Prometric testing centers around the world. Courseware will be available from Axzo Press and Element K.

CompTIA’s Strata program offers fundamental to advanced certificates that validate a wide range of subjects in IT. Students and professionals holding a CompTIA Strata certificate demonstrate that they have the knowledge required to enter and excel in IT and technology-related fields. In addition to the new green IT exam, other CompTIA Strata exams validate workplace topics in PC concepts and technical sales.
