Federal IT Security Certification Group to Offer Free Exams

WASHINGTON--The Federal IT Security Institute (FITSI) – the newly-formed nonprofit organization that provides security certification for federal civilian, military, and IT contractor staff – has announced it will give free certification exam vouchers to the first 500 candidates for any one of the four role-based certifications offered by FITSI.

Candidates are asked to provide the promo code FEDSEC at registration (the exam schedule is shown below). The normal fee for the exam is $295, which must be paid at the time of registration for all those who miss out on the 500 free vouchers.

“With concern about federal IT security at an all-time high, and the economy in the doldrums, we felt it was important to offer a special promotion to encourage federal IT professionals to demonstrate their IT security proficiency as soon as possible through these role-based certification exams,” said Jim Wiggins, FITSI executive director. “Giving 500 people the opportunity to achieve certification in a timely fashion will also demonstrate the real value of the Federal IT Security Professional (FITSP) certifications which will ultimately attract new people to the program.”

Candidates who take advantage of the free exam voucher will be required to join FITSI for the standard $45 annual fee, Mr. Wiggins said.

Launched earlier this year amid growing concern about federal IT security, the role-based FITSI program offers certification to four groups of federal IT professionals: managers, designers, operators and auditors. The goal of the program is to make federal IT systems more secure by assuring that the people who design, manage, operate, and audit the systems understand and can apply the appropriate federal IT security standards.
