Skill Level: Foundation                          Status: Being phased out

Low Cost: $150 (shortest track)

For individuals who want to distinguish themselves by demonstrating in-depth knowledge and expertise in a specific Microsoft technology, including implementing, building, troubleshooting, and debugging, particularly on Windows 7 or Server 2008. MCTS is the first step toward MCITP. MCTS certifications are no longer in development.

Initial Requirements:
Note that Microsoft changed its certification program structure, and the MCTS and MCITP are being phased out. No new MCTS exams will be released. However, if you're looking for certification on Windows 7 or Server 2008, this is still the go-to option.

There are currently about 50 MCTS tracks to choose from, including Exchange Server, Lync Server and Office Communications Server, Project and Project Server, SharePoint and SharePoint Server, and SQL Server, among others.

You are required to pass either one or two exams depending on the designation you choose. Exams are $150 each. Training is available but is not required.

Continuing Requirements:
Your certification will be retired to legacy status once mainstream support for the related technology is no longer available.
