Tell Everyone About That Certification You Have


Don't be afraid of trumpeting your certification accomplishments.At the time of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth compared his followers to a city on a hill "that cannot be hid," urging them not to cover up their convictions and actions. "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." A new post this week to the Microsoft Learn Blog has a similar thrust: Karina Ung, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Training and Certification, urges Microsoft certified professionals to break out the trumpet when it comes to the subject of their certification efforts. "Giving yourself a pat on the back and making sure others know you’ve put in all that effort not only feels good, it also empowers you to transform those additional tools into real benefits for your career. It ensures your professional network understands that you’re committed, hard-working, and talented enough to attain your career goals," Ung writes. There's more to do with your certification, in other words, than just brushing up your tech skills and adding a line to your résumé. If you have any IT certifications, no matter who they're from, then its worth reading Ung's post and considering her ideas.


Using Discounts to Fuel Your Certification Journey


As students are preparing to make the transition from high school to college, they often get a talking-to from someone — counselor, parent, favorite teacher — whose energetic advice boils down to something like this: "There's a lot of money out there for students headed to college. Take advantage of every scholarship, grant, endowment, or other form of free money that you can get your hands on." There's a similar phenomenon in the IT certification world, where sales events, discounts, promotions, and numerous other cost-saving measures are available to help certification candidates pay for their often expensive exams. If you like the sound of saving money on something that you're going to have to pay for one way or another anyway, then you can get some excellent ideas from a new post this week to official blog of tech industry association CompTIA. Blogger Debra McCraw, a CompTIA senior marketing manager, breaks down seven different opportunities to be on the lookout for as your prepare to make the leap from exam candidate to certified professional. For example, suppose that you're considering more than one certification: An excellent way to save money is to purchase a training bundle. Such bundles not only reduce training costs, but often come with exam vouchers. Don't pay too much for that muffler!


Gender Equality: Still a Problem in IT Circles


Tech employers still don't treat men and women equally.The problem of establishing equal treatment for men and women cuts across all workplaces, no matter what industry is under consideration. In industries where men predominate, however, the problem is often brought into much sharper relief. Such is the case in IT, where most if not all professional niches have been filled largely by men for decades. There's potentially a huge role for women to play in IT, especially in light of the persistent gap between employment demand and the generally diminishing supply of workers. Progress has certainly been made in creating a more welcoming environment for women in IT circles, but the new Equality in Tech Report from IT employment facilitator Dice is only the latest reminder that there is still a great of work to be done. Among other highlights of the report, 57 percent of women who participated say they have experienced gender discrimination in the workplace (compared to just 10 percent of men), and 53 percent of female participants report having directly seen evidence of salary and benefits discrimination (compared to just 24 percent of men).
