The Linux Foundation Slides Its Certs Into the AWS Marketplace
As an organization, The Linux Foundation thrives on establishing mutually beneficial partnerships — hardly a week goes by without the worldwide Linux entity adding another strand to its vast web of agreements and associations. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the latest organization to weave a new thread into this elegant tapestry. Effective immediately, certification exams and training courses curated by The Linux Foundation will be available for purchase via AWS Marketplace. AWS Marketplace is "a curated digital catalog that makes it easy to find, test, buy, and deploy" so-called "third-party" software solutions. The Linux Foundation offers some key credentials for cloud technologists, and AWS is all about dominating the market for cloud computing tools and services. So the new arrangement makes sense for both parties.
AWS Wades Into the AI Certification Arena
Speaking of AWS, the cloud colossus has focused a fraction of its attention squarely on AI. In addition to dominating recent news cycles — How many people learned who Sam Altman is over the past week? — AI has captured the attention of certification and training providers across the information technology (IT) industry. Now AWS Training and Certification is launching some new AI training courses according to a new post to the AWS Training and Certification Blog. AWS has offered a machine learning certification since 2019, so it's already a pioneer in the AI and AI-adjacent certification arena. Now comes the three new course offerings announced this week: Amazon SageMaker Studio for Data Scientists, Building Language Models on AWS, and Low-Code Machine Learning on AWS. Cloud computing is integral to almost everything happening in IT these days, so getting some AI training from the cloud computing market leader is a nifty double-down.

ISC2 PSA: Don't Fall for Fake Download Sites
Just about every program or service that runs on your computer these days is downloaded from somewhere. For the most part, the days when people would purchase various media like diskettes or CDs and use those to install programs are long gone. The near-total reliance on web-based downloads, however, has opened a golden door — potentially leading straight to your most sensitive data — for digital malefactors. A new post to the official blog of cybersecurity professional association ISC2 dives into the dangers presented by fake digital download sites, many of which are carefully crafted to make you think that you're using a legitimate service offered by a known provider. Cybersecurity hygiene checkups are always helpful, so even if you think you're entirely aware of the potential dangers here, it could be well worth your time to investigate further.
You Can Be a ... Smee? (SME)
SME stands for subject matter expert, a label typically applied to someone who has both extensive knowledge of a particular topic and a wide-ranging set of skills that align with that same topic. There are SMEs in many different industries, and IT certification SMEs are typically among those most directly responsible for the creation and promulgation of new IT certifications. (There's also this weird thing where people in the industry often pronounce the acronym, turning subject matter experts into "smees." Just like Captain Hook's sidekick from Peter Pan.) A new article from the October issue of Certification Magazine takes a peek behind the curtain of the SME realm to offer advice about what it takes to direct one's career into this rarefied strata. If you've ever fancied yourself an SME-in-the-making, then you may be interested to learn what ingredients typically go into the SME recipe.
