Certification Watch Volume 12 #13

Certification news regarding a new virtualization certification, allergy pending CompTIA exam updates, Oracle 11g OCM exams, new Cisco TelePresence certifications, Novell ZENworks Administrator, and certification headlines from SNIA and Teradata.

New Virtualization Certification from Red Hat

Red Hat has become the latest certification vendor to add a virtualization designation to its portfolio. The Red Hat Certified Virtualization Administrator (RHCVA) is for individuals who deploy and manage Linux and Microsoft Windows virtual instances using Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager and Hypervisor. As with other Red Hat exams, the test for RHCVA is a hands on practicum. It lasts 4 hours and costs $599. A list of required tasks is available on the Red Hat website.

CompTIA Updates Running a Little Behind

CompTIA has posted a notice on its website that completing the beta phase for new versions of its Project+ and Linux+ exams took longer than anticipated. The updated Linux+ exam is now slated for a January 2010 release with the new Project+ exam to follow in February.

Oracle 11g OCM Exams Rolling Out

Oracle has announced that the upgrade exam for Oracle Database 11g Certified Master (OCM) was just released on November 30th. It is a 1 day hands on exam, and individuals already certified as an OCM on Oracle 9i or 10g are eligible to take it. The "regular" 2 day OCM exam for 11g is still in the works. Details on all the upgrade rules can be found on Oracle's website.

Cisco at Work on TelePresence Certifications

Cisco Systems recently revealed plans to add two video specialist certifications covering its TelePresence product. Both the Cisco TelePresence Installations Specialist and Cisco TelePresence Solutions Specialist designations are slated for release in early 2010. The Solutions Specialist designation requires CCNA certification as a prerequisite. The Installations Specialist certification has no prerequisites. Objectives are not yet available.

New ZENworks Certification from Novell

Starting this month, individuals can earn Certified Novell ZENworks Administrator (CNZA) certification. This is a 1 test certification that covers ZENWorks configuration management including remote management, personality migration, asset management, and optimized application delivery, among numerous other topics. The exam contains 60 items and has a time limit of 55 minutes. A full list of objectives can be found on Novell's website.

SNIA Adds Entry Level, Online Certs

The Storage Networking Certification Program (SNCP) has created two specialization exams, both of which are available through online testing at $100 each. The SNIA Qualified Data Protection Associate (SQDPA) covers basic knowledge of data protection and recovery while the SNIA Qualified Storage Virtualization Associate (SQSVA) identifies storage fundamental skills and basic virtualization knowledge. Free tutorials are available on the SNIA description page for each exam.

Teradata 12 Exams Arrive

After a longish wait, the first 4 Teradata 12 exams are now available in testing centers. These include the Teradata 12 Basics, SQL, Database Administration, and Solutions Development exams. The first two cost $160 each in the U.S. and the second two $185 each. The Physical Design & Implementation and Enterprise Architecture exams will follow next month.
