Certification Watch Volume 13 #10

Certification news regarding a new Microsoft certification option, pay rates for certifications, Novell's CLE 11, Citrix virtualization certifications, upcoming Lotus Notes Domino retirements, and new Symantec exams.

Microsoft Launches Certification for Students

Microsoft's newest certification offering, Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA), is targeted at students and offers an entry point into Microsoft's certification program at an even more basic level than that of the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist. MTA certification tests will be available in classrooms rather than test centers and can only be taken by students, faculty, and staff of academic institutions that purchase a license to participate in the MTA program. Each exam covers fundamental knowledge of a broad technology area, such as web development or network fundamentals, and focuses on 80% knowledge and 20% skills. In this program, one exam = one certification. Although the MTA is suggested as an entry point into the Microsoft certification program, it is not a required step, and most entry level certification candidates will probably be better served by going straight to Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS). For more on the MTA program, see Microsoft's MTA FAQ.

Novell CLE 11 Now Available

The Novell Certified Linux Engineer (CLE) 11 practicum exam is now available. Exam objectives and registration are available through Novell's website.

Citrix Virtualization Certifications Go Live

Two advanced virtualization certifications from Citrix went live this week. The Citrix Certified Enterprise Engineer (CCEE) for Virtualization covers planning, design, and integration of Citrix virtualization solutions and includes three exams on individual Citrix products (XenDesktop, XenZpp, and XenServer) as well as completion of hands on, scenario type exam that includes complex virtualization simulations. The Citrix Certified Integration Architect (CCIA) for Virtualization is the highest Citrix certification and builds on the CCEE. It requires passing an additional exam, Architecting a Citrix Virtualization Solution. A shorter upgrade path is available to current Citrix CCEA and CCIA professionals.
