Microsoft Seeks Online Career Reality Show Applicants

Microsoft Learning recently announced plans to launch Career Factor, an online reality show that will debut in January 2011. The nine "dynamic individuals" selected for the show will be supplied with Microsoft training, certification, and other learning resources to help them launch or advance an IT career. Their process and progress will be documented and shared through social and digital media. There is no word as to whether participants will face being voted off for failing certification exams. If you want to become a career reality star, you'd better get clicking, because you only have until November 15, 2010, to apply to be on Career Factor.

Cisco Completes Major Revision of Security and Voice Certifications

In order to address the high demand for IT professionals with skills related to unified communications and security, Cisco recently revised its certification program to offer new opportunities for certification in these areas. A new CCNP Security credential designed for network security engineers will replace the Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) designation, and the Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP) designation has been converted to CCNP Voice. The CCNA Voice and CCIE Voice written exams were updated as well.

Citrix Virtualization Certification Upgrade Shortcut Expires Soon

Individuals planning to upgrade from a previous Citrix CCEA or CCIA certification to one of the new virtualization designations have until the end of the year to take advantage of the upgrade paths (one exam for CCEA, two for CCIA). After December 31, 2010, the full 5-exam path will be required for all CCEE candidates, with an additional exam to step up to CCIA for Virtualization.

Nortel Professional Certification Program Ending

November 30, 2010, is the last day Nortel Networks professional certification exams will be available. Avaya acquired Nortel's Enterprise Solutions (NES) business in December 2009, and Avaya has its own professional credential program. Existing Nortel certifications will remain valid, but it will no longer be possible to earn them after the deadline. New Computer Forensics Certification Launched

The Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists (ACEDS) launched its Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) exam on November 1st. This vendor-neutral computer forensics certification covers the technical and legal aspects of the e-discovery process. Candidates must meet experience, training, and education requirements in addition to passing the exam, which costs from $595 to $995 depending on your membership status and whether you work in the public or private sector.

The CEDS is the latest entry into the burgeoning arena of computer forensics certifications. This group of certifications identifies skills and knowledge regarding computer investigation and analysis techniques as they relate to potential legal evidence. Both vendor neutral and product specific certifications exist. Additional computer forensics certification options include:

 - AccessData Certified Examiner (ACE)
 - Certified Digital Forensics Examiner (CDFE)
 - EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) and EnCase Certified eDiscovery Practitioner (EnCEP)
 - EC Council's Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)
 - GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA)
 - Certified Computer Examiner (CCE)
 - CyberSecurity Forensic Analyst (CSFA)
