Certification Watch Volume 15 #7

Computer certification news about changes coming to CompTIA exams, cough MCSD Web Applications, retiring MCTS/MCITP/MCPD exams, and current Oracle beta opportunities.

CompTIA Expands Beyond Multiple Choice

Multiple choice has questions have been the staple of many certification exams since the first exam was written. Microsoft started adding simulation-based questions in 2005. Now CompTIA is finally making the leap. Performance-based questions will start appearing on CompTIA A+ exams in October 2012, in Network+ exams by the end of 2012, and Security+ in the first quarter of 2013. To answer these questions, candidates will have to perform a task or solve a problem using a simulated environment. Getting these questions right is potentially tricky, so be sure to read CompTIA's announcement for further details.

Next MCSD Certification to Arrive in October

The second credential in the new MCSD lineup is almost here. MCSD: Web Applications is for developers who use MVC, Azure, HTML5, and CSS3. There are three required exams:

- 70-480: Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3
- 70-486: Developing ASP.NET 4.5 MVC Web Applications
- 70-487: Developing Windows Azure and Web Services

The first one (70-480), which also is part of the MCSD: Metro Style Apps track, is scheduled to become available August 20th. The others are slated for release in October 2012.

Goodbye MCTS, MCITP, and MCPD Exams

Microsoft currently has 63 certification exams scheduled for deletion. The list includes: - 5 exams on September 30, 2012, including Exchange Server 2007 exams. - 9 exams on January 31, 2013, including SharePoint Server 2007 and Project Server 2007 exams. - 49 exams on July 31, 2013, including SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio 2010, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008. A list of the affected certifications is posted on the Born to Learn blog. If you want one of them, you'd better hop on it!
